International review of architecture and engineering
Accredited ANVUR GEV 08
The magazine EdA Examples of Architecture, with the requirement of 'peer review', was created to disseminate scientific papers published by universities and research centres, in order to focus attention on the critical reading of the projects. The intention is to create a place for a cultural debate on interdisciplinary topics, with the aim to investigate issues related to different fields of study ranging from history, restoration, architectural and structural design, technology, landscape and the city.
Submission Guidelines EDA Examples of Architecture
Authors: EDA, Esempi di Architettura on.line invites submissions from researchers in architecture, restoration, history of architecture, civil engineering and related disciplines.
Type of Articles: Only research articles are published, no book or exhibition reviews
Topics: Contributions on any topic in architecture, restoration, history of architecture, civil engineering and related disciplines are welcome. However, articles should be original and innovative, offering new research material and/or new perspectives.
Languages: Articles in one of the four languages authorized: Italian, English, Spanish, French and German.
Length: Preferred article length (text, including footnotes) is between 20.000 and 80.000 characters (including spaces), i.e., between c. 8 and 30 pages à 3.000 characters (including spaces). However, both shorter and more comprehensive articles as well as articles including appendices are also welcome.
Publication Status: Only unpublished manuscripts are accepted.

Le Reti Tematiche sono una struttura informatica scientifica a cui afferiscono diversi ambiti tematici di ricerca con i rispettivi responsabili scientifici. Questi ambiti sono opportunamente individuati all'interno delle Reti mediante una «denominazione» che indica il settore disciplinare nel quale si sviluppa l'attività di ricerca. Caratteristiche delle Reti Tematiche:
- Ogni ambito tematico di ricerca ha un responsabile scientifico e/o un collaboratore.
- Il responsabile scientifico cura e coordina le pubblicazioni proposte nel proprio "ambito tematico di ricerca". Tutti i contributi sono sottoposti a referaggio scientifico.

A MEDIEVAL BRIDGE NEAR FLORENCE
Hidden in the green countryside near Florence in Bagno a Ripoli (FI), the small stone arch bridge over the Rignalla brook, left tributary of the river Arno, has been recently discovered. The Reclamation Consortium of Central Tuscany, the authority for the protection and maintenance of soil and waterways, has entrusted us with a research project aimed at a cognitive analysis of the bridge and a rehabilitation and functional recovery project for a pedestrian public use. The date of the laying of the foundation-stone in unknown: it is believed to be a “Roman bridge”. The historical research, also supported by the static analysis to evaluate the degree of stability of such a structure, suggests the possibility to attribute the design of the bridge to Leonardo da Vinci.

El barrio El Jordán de la ciudad de Tunja
The present document is part of the research project ''Territory, memory and identity in the popular urban settlements: the case of the Jordan district of the city of Tunja in the second half of the 20th century (1950-1980)'', whose purposes are to know construction of identity processes, carried out by the inhabitants of this sector and promote the strengthening of community ties and the group conscience. Accordingly, the document seeks to highlight some of the practices that have contributed to the phenomenon of appropriation of space, as well as to establish the relevance of these for the construction of a neighborhood identity, in this sector of the city, taking into account the character of its inhabitants and the circumstances of the occupation process.

BRUNO VIOLI Y LA OBRA DEL EDIFICIO ''EL TIEMPO''
Bruno Violi, Italian architect has been listed as an architect of the modern movement, denomination easily justified in considering his built work and in the immense material drawings today are a valuable source for research about the origins and development of modern art in Colombia, from architecture. In search of modern principles Violi with other architects trained in Europe, working on worthwhile projects of national architecture, such as the University City in 1939, forming a stream of art that influences significantly the history of Colombian architecture, produced during the decades of the 40's buildings 70'sy currently recognized as a national heritage. Bruno Violi articulated the idea of architecture built on two fundamental entities-bearing structure and sectors closing-expressed in concrete formally different, both the construction process and the values and quality materica, grain and color. The option of Violi for the dualistic structure / closure is therefore a fundamental poetic assertion that concrete in building “El Tiempo” (1958), with the clarity and concise nature of a manifesto and reports on previous and subsequent developments of its architecture. Violi able to resolve this contradiction with the domination of technology in a new architectural order through a long and careful investigation.

MUSICALIDAD, DISONANCIA Y SILENCIO EN EL CENTRO HISTORICO DE BOGOTA'
The theme corresponds to interventions in consolidated centers. We analyzed, comparatively, two architectural projects located in the historic center of Bogota. Image 1, art museum of the Bank of the Republic of Enrique Triana and Image 2, Fondo de Cultura Económica de Rogelio Salmona. The present writing is assumed as a critical process about interventions in contemporary consolidated centers. For the development of the exercise are taken two projects in Bogota.
The prelude as a prelude to the critical exercise, it is advancing with the study of the context of the historical center, the equipment that helped consolidate, and the insertion of the urban projects; henceforth, to sustain the critical position, the work is oriented toward display relevant aspects of the work of two architects. The next step is to address the building Fund of Economic Culture of Rogelio Salmona arguing the elements that disuenan in the intervention; and the Art Museum of the Bank of the Republic of Enrique Triana as a discreet and quiet position in the center consolidated.

LA CONSERVACION DE LA ARQUITECTURA PATRIMONIAL DEL SIGLO XX
The study of the protection of the architectural heritage of the twentieth century can analyze specific cultural parameters to define the value of architecture. The focus is mainly on architecture created by architects of national and international fame. It is rather interesting to analyze also the architectural development often excluded by parameters of evaluation because it was considered of no great value. To understand the development of cities is fundamental to analyze this heritage also ignored. Is important to define the evaluation criteria of this heritage and conservation methods. In the analysis of evaluation involved political, social, economic and generated different ways of preserving this heritage.

Heritage Series. Ibagué Colombia
From a particular vision of heritage structure is a way to demonstrate the potential methodological material heritage town of Ibague. Methodologically starts from the concepts of type, type and number, around these notions are incorporated with potential real estate, in order to make them visible to the inhabitants of the region, while contrasting with topics related to authors the series. The result is building two new proposals, as typological series and series bio-poetic function symbiotically, the two series are assets. Based on the results of the study concluded that the implementation of this route methodological proposal can provide recognition as a heritage house recondite, constituting an alternative possibility of nomination from local heritage.

Light, like the other elements of ‘fire', together with ‘earth', ‘wind' and ‘water' constitute the points of reflection upon which are based the research and activities of INBAR- the National Institute of BioArchitecture - that, with its first BioLaboratorio entitled “Let's catch the Sun” held Alcamo on 12.10.2012, saw the participation of various experts and academics in this field of study, chaired by the President of the Scientific Committee of INBAR , based in Trapani, Prof. G. De Giovanni. In particular, the contribution of E. W. Angelico has made an intense impact on the various forms of lights; between the natural and artificial; between the direct and indirect; between illuminated artefacts and luminous artefacts. Architecture often endows every action in direct proportion, light with the space - both for illumination (therefore, designed in relation to its dark and light) and to be luminous (therefore indicating the relationship between external and internal). Some examples permit the reading of the efficacy of light in a journey from the ‘natural' .

The work related to the first phase of the Bethlehem Area Conservation and Management Plan (BACMP) has been developed according to a program of «Developing capacities through technical cooperation». The Plan, funded by the Italian Cooperation with the support of UNESCO and under the technical and scientific supervision of a group of international consultants, had a dual purpose. Parallel to the conventional work on conservation and planning, a Capacity Building process was developed in order to overcome the lack of local specialists in the field of survey and GIS for urban rehabilitation and renewal.

SISTEMI DI VENTILAZIONE NATURALE
The study consists of developing a methodology for the design of natural ventilation systems, based on information legislation, which has the scope of the school building. It configures as an instrument to support the renovation project, for the definition of integrated performance between the building envelope and natural ventilation systems through horizontal, structured in a set of sheets containing preliminary guidelines in terms of comfort, quality management and environmental compatibility.

BORGHI E PAESAGGI RURALI DELLA BASILICATA
The social-political reality areas of agricultural and town planning transformation in the territories of Lucania can be subdivided into newly founded rural villages, settlements dating back to 1940-60 built after the Land Reform and in addition to these there are also the architectural buildings spread throughout the territory, which are nonetheless linked to production and the economy. A critical study of these architectural buildings and technological innovations involved, is analysed in-depth by survey using scientific methods, documenting and classifying the architectural structures.

IL RUOLO DELL'UTOPIA NELLA COSTRUZIONE DELL'URBANISTICA
On the background of the contemporary re-emerging of some typical issues of the utopian tradition, the aim of this essay is to analyse the meaning and the role played by the utopian dimension within the construction of urban and regional planning by focusing on the relationships between both the Ebenezer Howard´s model of garden city and London during the Industrial Revolution and the latter and the origins of urban and regional planning as a “technical” discipline.

APROXIMACIÓN FORANEA AL PATRIMONIO BOYACENSE
This paper constitutes an approach to heritage Boyacá, in regard to general features that translate their culture, but with emphasis on artificial facts represented in urban public space - parks, streets - and those buildings that their importance to historical and architectural level have been recognized as a fundamental part of the built heritage in Colombian territory, the look herein will relate our professional work with prints, obtained through the paths and recognition of cultural values in this region, reflected through photographs and drawings, which allowed capture moments, but also the essence that enclose its wonderful landscapes, composed of natural and artificial elements in constant interaction. It then translates an itinerary composed of those who, in our view, appear to be the main sites and aspects that make up the heritage of two of the most representative of this department: Tunja, the capital, and Villa de Leyva, given its historical and architectural legacy as part of its built heritage. Finally, the paper acts as a first approach that can contribute to the generation of a greater awareness of the importance of heritage, to build a regional identity.

Il posto di Maredolce. Un paradiso a Brancaccio
By sharing of the presentation to the Colloquium RIGPAC, we want to account for a number of initiatives to Palermo from the restoration of a monument, the Palace rediscovered of Maredolce (norman foundation of seniority arabic), we are conducting for there development of industrial Brancaccio area of Palermo. To preserve the identity of the community has created a public-private partnership coordinated by the Department of the University of Palermo, which has set in motion several parallel actions aimed at:
- The enhancement and use of the building closed to the public and to be rediscovered by the Forum of onlus organization that deal with cultural property in Palermo (exhibitions, guided tours).
- Active involvement of the resident population by the international project PARTERRE, (modeled on the experience of the Tuscany Region), which has experienced a Brancaccio an electronic instrument dedicated to participatory planning: Electronic Town Meeting (E-TM) to allow the people themselves to participate in decision-making in the city (Strategic Plan).

RICERCA DI SISTEMI DI PROTEZIONE APPROPRIATI PER SCHEMI PREFABBRICATI
The paper presents the layout and the first development of a research targeted on the study of seismic protection devices at low cost to be inserted in the joints of precast concrete building systems. The first part of the work is targeted to the classification of devices, with particular attention to construction details, the compatibility of seismic code and the costs of production. The second part of the work is targeted to the identification of technological strategies that can improve the expected seismic performance to prefabricated systems . With reference to a case study, was established the increase of the seismic capacity of structural precast systems and the reduction of cost construction of the elements in order to offset the cost of the devices.

IL PONTE DASHENGGUAN SUL FIUME YANGTZE
The Beijing-Shangai high speed railway started the construciton in 2008 and has been recently completed: this high-speed new railway line is 1318 km long with a design speed of 350 km/h, including structures as the relevant Yangtze river crossing in Jiangsu province. The new Dashengguan bridge is located in 1.5km upstream of the existing 3rd Nanjing Yangtze road bridge, the alignment of which was based on the general construction scheme of the Beijing-Shangai high speed railway, the Shangai-Wuhan-Chengdu express railway, the urban rail transit system, and the local geological and hydrological conditions. This article deals with the description of the Dashengguan bridge, as it could be considered the world´s longest span high speed railway bridge ever built.
The Beijing-Shangai high speed railway started the construciton in 2008 and has been recently completed: this high-speed new railway line is 1318 km long with a design speed of 350 km/h, including structures as the relevant Yangtze river crossing in Jiangsu province. DUE PROGETTI DI ALDO ROSSI
Aldo Rossi had two main ways to relate to architecture: one was constructed through the process of knowledge and the other one through the process of imagination. Those two ways are captured and synthesized in a couple of definitely antithetical projects: San Cataldo cemetery in Modena and Teatro del Mondo in Venice. San Cataldo Cemetery is an analog city for the dead, displaying the process deducted from the observation of the architecture of the city, that is where all his interests and feelings are condensed. The theatre in Venice, on the opposite, is the objectification in image of the idea of city, an architectural object capable of retaining in its inside the iconography and the spirit of the city of Venice.

ESTUDIO DE CASO MALECÓN TRADICIONAL DE LA HABANA - CUBA
In Cuba, the constructions, in a general way, are subjected to a process of marked deterioration, given by the lack of systematic maintenance, the envelope exploitation, the bad quality of the materials and the processes of execution inadequate employees in the constructive carried out interventions.
In the last half a decade, they have been carried out constructive interventions to a group of constructions of housings of the Traditional Pier with new materials but without achieving a substantial advance neither a durable recovery of the same ones. The specialists possess approaches divided on if it is adapted or not the use of these materials. However, a real evaluation of the effectiveness of these solutions doesn't exist in front of those considered as traditional.
This work shows the results of the investigation carried out by the author to opt for the grade of Máster in social Housing and its tutor. He is carried out an approach to the use and development of these New Materials in Cuba. The solutions are evaluated for the alterations identified in the Pier as much with traditional materials as with the new materials as for execution speed, durability and annual costs and he/she is defined which is the most suitable solution to face the recovery of the same ones.

CASA CATTANEO. CERNOBBIO
An ideal home derived by a perfect geometry. The rigor of lightness, the theme of transparency and vertical distribution: proportion and perfection that are explained in all the scales and details: from the handle to the internal layout, from the wise use of solids and voids, to the materials. A corollary of all compositive aspects. The house for rent, located on Como lake, was designed, between 1938 and '39, by Cesare Cattaneo, rationalist architect from Como, just 3 years later his diploma in architecture at Milan Polytechnic. Being owned by himself, he can experiment freely, “without succumbing to the tyrannical desire of clients”, his enthusiasm for details. It is a small apartments building for the middle class, an ideal field to test a number of problems of composition and technology: from distribution to the location on the environment, from the cost to the good keeping in time, providing us, with a structure still well preserved, an innovative study of Modern solutions. The house stands on a site alongside a short distance from anonymous dwellings. The initial choice was therefore to communicate a violent conflict with the closer existing architectures, claimed the right to belong Modern architecture inside of city centers. Although the natural context of the lake, the visual cones, the broad urban environment are subtly understood inside the project, Cattaneo wants, with his architecture, to give an innovative element for the place, with characteristics that could almost be described as a monumental modernism.

The underlying concepts of earthquake engineering have evolved substantially over recent years. The objectives have become more ambitious and procedures for building design have become more complex. Countries subject to seismic risk have updated their standards: some to a considerable extent, others less so. In any case, greater attention is now focused directly on the prevention of building collapse by controlling the post-elastic behaviour that constructions bring into play to defend themselves when attacked by violent earthquakes. Consequently, design requirements are no longer met by performing only traditional resistance checks on assigned forces systems, because the checks must now refer to requirements with predefined performance criteria.

In his classic text Cities in History, Lewis Mumford discusses the image and social structure of ancient cities. Mumford refers to the ideal, or dreamed city, as belonging to the urban utopian tradition. This ideal city is the foundation of utopian cities as such.
This utopian trend has run along for centuries and can be interpreted as a natural human inclination to transcend the here and now. The utopian dream has been endless and has permeated all kinds of social endevours. The first versions of the South American utopia can be traced back to mythical drawings which seem to envision a ''fourth continent'' which , in turn, are the germs of the so called '' New World''

The city of Seville has become a complex relationship metapolis of mobility and function; this does not alter the fact that there are pockets of urban life enriched by his own physical condition and lifestyle. The case of the Macarena is especially interesting because it contains two realities of identity, on the one hand, the brand image produced by the powerful religious and folk tradition, projecting its image globally, and on the other hand the local culture, whose identity is directly defined by a physical medium (plot) and a dense social fabric adapted to a lifestyle somewhere between the customs of traditional and new forms of life that retrieve such traditions. The evolution in the design approach to sustainable building refurbishment is mainly due to an increased level of performance required to meet the targets set by current legislations in terms of reduction of CO2 emissions and energy consumption. The paper outlines the industrial production trends for the retrofit in Europe, with particular focus to the UK, where the development of eco-innovative construction products is showing substantial results in relation to mass retrofitting interventions onto existing buildings.

Researches on developing countries highlight the role of traditional knowledge in achieving sustainability goals based on an appropriate use of natural resources, by establishing the harmony of architecture with the environment, the symbiosis of the techniques of organization of space with the traditions, the social habits, the spiritual values and the fusion between practical aspects and beauty. Some historical infrastructures of Italian municipalities in the Middle Age and in the Renaissance – such as the underground aqueduct of the city of Siena – also constitutes an example of these shared social-natural “constructs”.

Apart from the few recent buildings designed and built according to NTC (2008), design and intervention methods of existing buildings are going to be investigated with more and more attention. In the context of many historical cases, which have indicated the high vulnerability of these buildings, and in relation to the mandatory provisions of actual codes and regulations, this article introduces the problem outlining the regulatory system, then focuses on how to approach the issue of checking existing structures, and finally outlines the main mode of intervention, improvement or repair of existing hospitals.

The empirical approach in the evolution of bridge and structure
This paper illustrates the result of a study concerning the design and modeling of structures of the famous Italian engineer Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979). His approach in studying and in building a large amount of structure, has a theoretical base, never investigated deeply. From an analysis of the documents and from a comparison among diverse buildings by Nervi, it is possible to recognize his innovative theory, in which structure and architecture are the subject of the art of making buildings: the theory of practice

Il restauro come pelle: Villa Antonietta a Palermo
Of the many Liberty buildings in Palermo, this article describes Villa Antonietta, a building relatively unknown and of obscure attribution. Recently, restoration work has been undertaken. Here, for the sake of brevity is described solely a few issues related to the theme of colour in the Liberty style that in this Villa have been undertaken according to the principles of philological restoration, based upon the pre-existing examples in Mondello, where the Villa is situated.

La cripta di San Michele in Borgo a Pisa: un tesoro da salvare
The crypt of church of San Michele in Borgo was discovered by Alessandro da Morrona during the XIX century. Probably, the crypt belonged to the native building of X century and it´s vault was decorated with frescos during the XII century. Important repairs were effected by Peleo Bacci in the 1911 and by Piero Sanpaolesi and Massimo Carmassi during the second postwar period. Unfortunatly, the intervention of repair were never brought to term and nowadays the crypt appears in state of neglect.

LA URBANIZACIÓN SAN FRANCISCO JAVIER
En 1911, el sacerdote español José María Campoamor fundó la sociedad Círculo de Obreros con el ánimo de mejorar las condiciones de vida de los obreros de Bogotá. Después vino la Caja de Ahorros del Círculo de Obreros, y en 1913 se inició la construcción de una urbanización de 120 casas para sus afiliados. Estas solo se daban en arriendo, y se les adjudicaban exclusivamente a obreros asalariados sin propiedad alguna, quienes debían cumplir un reglamento de convivencia y observar sólidos principios religiosos. Dicha urbanización se construyó al sur de la ciudad, en las afueras de entonces, con una serie de particularidades que la hicieron casi autosuficiente y la convirtieron en la primera urbanización para obreros de Colombia y en un ejemplo de construcción social y convivencia, cuya arquitectura y cuyos habitantes, viviendo en una especie de pueblito, forjaron una identidad propia sin intervención del Estado.

In this study the unconventional bridge typology related to the network arch shape is presented and investigated. This typology, as stated from one of the principal investigator of this structural example (Per Tveit) should be preferred to standard vertical steel arch bridge cable arrangement in most cases, as illustrated in the following. In this study some examples related to steel bridges are reported and investigated. The aim is to deep the knowledge of stainless steel materials applied to a very wide variety of pedestrian bridges, in order to fill the gap of conventional building typologies. Advances in the knowledge and constructional details are investigated and illustrated.

Preservación del Patrimonio Arquitectónico Industrial
The present work features the proposal for the repair, reinforcement and reconstruction of Bodega Arizu (Arizu Winery). The Bodega Arizu building dates from 1888 and it has been designated National Historic Monument. It is located on the Province of Mendoza (Argentina – South America) which is considered a high seismic risk zone. At first, the building of a shopping mall was projected in the site, but the idea was soon dismissed due to incompatibility with the area. At present, the building is run-down. The proposal aims at rescuing the architectural heritage represented by Bodega Arizu within the city's historic, social and economic context, since such winery is considered a symbol of Mendoza's viticulture history and technological progress. In order to undertake the proposal, several tests were conducted to determine the forces acting upon the existing structure of the former winery's main building (clay bricks - brick arches). The structure presents severe damages such as collapse decks, wall cracks, and leakage. All this deficiencies have led to increasing building deterioration. The seismic risk aggravates the situation and makes the structure prone to major damages caused by dynamic excitations.
For the purpose of exploiting the tourist and cultural potential of this industrial historic heritage site, various solutions complying with state-of the-art public safety standards and regulations in force were given and the winery building was adapted to present structural, architectural and urban requirements

During the XVIII century, painters and architects in the Veneto used the ''camera obscura'' to make city views and drawings of individual buildings. This article examines the history of this instrument from its origins to its use by the Venetian townscape painters and architects in the 1700s; furthermore the text reports about the different kinds of “camera obscura” it was possible to use in the XVIII century showing some pictures included a pattern of the camera known as Canaletto's one.

ARCHITETTURA DEL MONDO ISLAMICO
The architecture of the Islamic world is often considered, even nowadays, like an indistinct whole, notwithstanding its century-old history and multiple artistic forms, risen on an area that involves forty nations and spans over three continents. This is the consequence of an Eurocentric and outdated vision, which considers Islam as a static, monolithic and closed universe: a symmetric vision also shared by some ideological trends existing inside the Islamic world itself. Islam art, architecture and culture, instead, cannot be fully understood if not considering the interactions and trading with various other civilizations. Breaking with the traditional isolation of the Muslim universe, this book underlines the fertile fabric of intercultural contaminations which characterize the architecture in the Islamic world during the Middle Age, between VII and XV century, from the Iberian peninsula to Sicily, from Egypt to India, and shows, thanks also to a rich, and mostly unpublished, iconographic apparatus, the peculiarity of the styles that mark different periods and regions.

Torino: il nuovo volto dell'ex Choccolat Tobler
Main theme of the project is the concept of liveliness, enlighted also by the particular location of the transforming area, crossroad of different cultural logics and interests; however it's exactly the fragmented identity of this area which permits to risk innovative solutions which aim to improve its image and to encourage a future economic progress. In the same concept of liveliness the project bases its moves for a reinterpretation of living, through a flexible use of the spaces which determined the peculiar wedge logic of the residential units.

This document aims to reflect on a specific aspect of urban public space, related uses and appropriations of the street in neighborhood communities in the city of Ibagué. The street has been regarded by history as one of the main components of the system of public space, since it constitutes excellence in field of communication and citizen relationships. However, walking or watching our cities, we see how people use public space for their own benefit, regardless of their collective character, which is evident in statements that deny, in the case of the street, their intrinsic public status.

Egle Trincanato's plans for buildings in the centre of Venice
The only well-known design to have been produced by Egle Trincanato and Giuseppe Samonà was the 1952 plan for the INAIL building at San Simeone in the centre of Venice. In 1960 their work was reviewed by Vittorio Gregotti in Casabella magazine and is generally considered to be one of very few masterly examples of contemporary architecture to be built in Venice during the second half of the twentieth century. The architects Samonà and Trincanato also designed at least four other buildings for the centre of Venice, which were never built. Meanwhile, Trincanato alone was responsible for three designs, two for hotels and one for a private house: these include a rationalist design for the Bauer Hotel and a plan inspired by the work of Wright for the Danieli Hotel.

Seismic isolation is coming out from its pioneer period and now it is on the way to become a popular system for the seismic protection of ordinary structures. The criteria concerning the architectural morphology, the selection of the structural configurations and other design options of seismic isolated buildings shall be discussed to popularise its use, to improve the effectiveness of ordinary applications, to cut down the construction costs and to open the way to new and wide applications. Moreover, the experts should emphasise the higher reliability of the design procedures commonly used for fixed-base structures, when applied to isolated structures. The target is to avoid that new applications are discouraged by unnecessary and complex analyses required by specific codes. Taking the opportunity of some demonstrative initiatives promoted by the local Government of the Umbria Region after the seismic ''swarm'' that struck central Italy in 1997 and 1998, this papers deals with practical topics concerning the application of seismic isolation to ordinary residential and commercial buildings.

Il Palazzo Pretorio di Anghiari nel XX secolo
The Pretorio Building, in Anghiari town center, today shows a complex history of transformations and restaurations. Most of them were due to important seismic events that, since the XIII century, have been widely documented. Starting from the XX century, the main interventions followed the damages caused by earthquakes that held from the 1917 to the 2001. Today the Building is object of a restauration project and seismic improvement as provided from the recent Lines for the evaluation and reduction of the seismic risk of the cultural patrimony.

In this paper the effect of impact is studied using linear and viscous_elastic contact force model for different separation distances and seven recorded earthquake excitation are used for input. Pounding produces acceleration, shear story and peak drift that are greater than ones obtain from the no pounding case. The evaluation of expected damage is checked through the seismic demand parameters.

If Ponti writes: ''The architects? Is not their a profession but a grace”, Rogers replied that architecture is a carefulness engagement, a commitment. Two faces become necessities of life, eros and logos, Calvino's lightness of memory (companion of every Pontian creation) in contrast to ideological confrontation. United in diversity, figures needed in mutual consideration of their specific features, shape in crucial stage of the debate about modern architecture, in the common perception of the powerful legacy of history, to be reinterpreted today in the transverse architecture stifled by the logic of contract and subservience to fashion.

DEL MONUMENTO A LA CIUDAD
Dentro del cambiante mundo de hoy y su paulatina pérdida de referencias, uno de los temas más recurrentes, particularmente en el estudio de la ciudad, es el que tiene que ver con la preservación de su patrimonio. En este orden de ideas, conceptos como “monumento arquitectónico” o “centro histórico” cobran especial vigencia en tanto su existencia, al menos tal y como la conocemos tradicionalmente, resulta en entredicho a la luz de la evanescente movilidad de la ciudad actual. De este modo, la pregunta que surge no puede ser otra que: ¿cómo orientarnos en medio del cambio? O, dicho de otro modo, ¿de qué valernos en medio de la movilidad? Cuestionamiento que a su vez nos lleva a interrogarnos por los medios para hacerlo y, en este mismo sentido, por lo que en realidad vale la pena “conservar” para alcanzar este fin.
En este mismo sentido, surge la duda de si podemos seguir llamando “monumento” al bien patrimonial y, de no ser así, cómo llamar aquello que en su reemplazo permite asumir su papel referencial, ¿qué sería aquello?, ¿cuál sería su naturaleza? y, sobre todo, ¿que relación podríamos establecer con la ciudad a través de él? Preguntas que en última instancia pasan tanto por un nuevo posicionamiento frente a lo que denominamos “historia” como por la construcción de una consecuente teoría de la ciudad.
Dentro del cambiante mundo de hoy y su paulatina pérdida de referencias, uno de los temas más recurrentes, particularmente en el estudio de la ciudad, es el que tiene que ver con la preservación de su patrimonio. En este orden de ideas, conceptos como “monumento arquitectónico” o “centro histórico” cobran especial vigencia en tanto su existencia, al menos tal y como la conocemos tradicionalmente, resulta en entredicho a la luz de la evanescente movilidad de la ciudad actual. De este modo, la pregunta que surge no puede ser otra que: ¿cómo orientarnos en medio del cambio? O, dicho de otro modo, ¿de qué valernos en medio de la movilidad? Cuestionamiento que a su vez nos lleva a interrogarnos por los medios para hacerlo y, en este mismo sentido, por lo que en realidad vale la pena “conservar” para alcanzar este fin.
En este mismo sentido, surge la duda de si podemos seguir llamando “monumento” al bien patrimonial y, de no ser así, cómo llamar aquello que en su reemplazo permite asumir su papel referencial, ¿qué sería aquello?, ¿cuál sería su naturaleza? y, sobre todo, ¿que relación podríamos establecer con la ciudad a través de él? Preguntas que en última instancia pasan tanto por un nuevo posicionamiento frente a lo que denominamos “historia” como por la construcción de una consecuente teoría de la ciudad.

RELACIÓN DE REGISTROS URBANOS DEL BARRIO SAN FRANCISCO JAVIER
Este escrito no pretende ser historia, sino dar algunas puntadas para preservar la memoria de los hombres, es muestra de la investigación que se adelanta hace 7 años sobre el patrimonio modesto en el sur de la cuidad. Es esta una ocupación con características únicas en la ciudad y en el país sin olvidar que en América Latina hay una historia con otra escala de medición. Desde la Independencia de los españoles en 1810 al año de 1911 cuando un grupo de obreros se reúne con un sacerdote a soñar con una vivienda higiénica y digna son casi cien (100) años para lograr crear a las afueras de la ciudad un lugar casi autosuficiente para los obreros, artesanos y sus familias en unas condiciones muy particulares. Tenían un reglamento de convivencia muy estricto, costumbres fuertemente influenciadas por la religión y una estructura urbana que hacia que tuviera sus propias instalaciones y su propia organización. Actualmente el barrio cuenta con 96 años de fundación y la comunidad que la habita en su segunda y tercera generación hicieron una declaratoria ciudadana para reconocer el sitio como patrimonio modesto a nivel Distrital y a la memoria intangible con que cuenta. Esto debido a la paulatina desaparición y a la carencia de una protección normativa que parta desde de la autoridad.

When on March 17 the French Minister of Culture, Christine Albanel, opened the public presentation and exhibition of the consultation Le Grand Pari(s), she described the output of the ten teams of invited architects, planners and experts, as ''impressive''. Commissioned by President Sarkozy and developed over a period of nine months, this consultation may well remain in history as the cornerstone of the ''post-Kyoto'', ''sustainable'', city.

Palacio de la Inquisición en Cartagena de Indias
Las obras de restauración del Palacio de la Inquisición y su acondicionamiento para el funcionamiento del Museo Histórico de Cartagena, fueron terminadas en noviembre de 2003. Concluía así un largo proceso iniciado en 1996 cuando el Instituto Nacional de Vías, a través de la Subdirección de Monumentos Nacionales, decidió emprender esa tarea dentro del plan general de rehabilitación del patrimonio arquitectónico que se había propuesto realizar en varios centros históricos del país.

Architettura e Città, Storia e Progetto
Il testo indaga la questione del rapporto tra Storia e Progetto nel pensiero di Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Giuseppe Samonà e Ludovico Quaroni proponendo la teoria della Architettura della Città aldorossiano come momento di sintesi di quanto elaborato dalle Scuole di Milano, Venezia e Roma. La tesi finale è che quella Teoria possa/debba ancora oggi dare importanti indicazioni per guidare i progettisti nella costruzione della città contemporanea nel rispetto della tradizione.

Il testo è una ipotesi di ricostruzione del singolare rapporto tra O.M.Ungers e l'Italia a partire dalla prima apparizione del Maestro tedesco nel numero 244 di Casabella nel 1960 - in un saggio e firmato da Aldo Rossi - fino alla consacrazione segnata dalla Mostra sulla sua opera nella Basilica palladiana di Vicenza e dalla laurea ad honorem a Cesena. Momento chiave di questo rapporto è la XV Triennale di Milano del 1973 nella quale si consolida, da parte di Ungers come di molti altri protagonisti della architettura internazionale, l'adesione al progetto unico della architettura razionale.

Il controllo delle reti di ponti
La rete infrastrutturale italiana, ferroviaria e stradale, presenta oggi un elevato grado di vetustà e comporterà a breve-medio termine una ingente richiesta di stanziamenti per interventi di manutenzione e ricostruzione. In particolare i ponti si presentano oggi come elemento critico delle arterie infrastrutturali, in quanto non più in grado di sopportare carichi e velocità agenti sempre crescenti ed al limite in certi casi delle capacità resistenti dei materiali costitutivi assai degradati. Si pone dunque con urgenza il tema dell´individuazione di un parametro di gerarchizzazione degli interventi nella rete infrastrutturale via via in esame, non essendo possibile nella limitatezza delle risorse intervenire con rapidità sull´intero insieme di ponti oggetto dell´indagine. In Italia oltre al monitoraggio delle opere infrastrutturali previsto normativamente, non esiste una cogenza di adozione di sistemi di Bridge Managment (BMS), altrove più diffusi ed utilizzati. Si presenta nel seguito un sistema di bridge managment perfezionato recentemente, che pone le basi per future applicazioni in ambito infrastrutturale.

Le recenti innovazioni nei ponti ferroviari per l'Alta Velocità
Per quanto concerne i ponti di media luce, si vanno via via affermando soluzioni innovative con l'adozione sempre più diffusa in Francia e Spagna di ponti composti a doppia travata.
La tecnologia, già adottata correntemente per i ponti autostradali e stradali, viene opportunamente adattata alle richieste tecnologiche dell'Alta Velocità, aumentandone la rigidezza e agendo correttamente sul progetto per tenere in considerazione i diversi effetti dinamici dovuti al passaggio dei veicoli ad Alta Velocità.
Per quanto concerne i ponti di media luce, si vanno via via affermando soluzioni innovative con l'adozione sempre più diffusa in Francia e Spagna di ponti composti a doppia travata.
La tecnologia, già adottata correntemente per i ponti autostradali e stradali, viene opportunamente adattata alle richieste tecnologiche dell'Alta Velocità, aumentandone la rigidezza e agendo correttamente sul progetto per tenere in considerazione i diversi effetti dinamici dovuti al passaggio dei veicoli ad Alta Velocità.

Una città a ''misura di uomo''
Le città europee sono sempre più poliglotte e multietniche, pertanto, le relazioni che in essa si stabiliscono sono fondate su delicati equilibri che richiedono fasi di adattamento sempre più lunghe ed articolate. Questa ricchezza socio-culturale ha il compito di dover garantire e favorire non solo il permanere dei caratteri propri del patrimonio storico-ambientale del territorio di riferimento ma anche quelli più strettamente sociali ed economici dei diversi gruppi che vi risiedono e vi lavorano, garantendo loro anche la possibilità di svolgere un ruolo determinante nell'ambito della tutela e dello sviluppo dell'ambiente sociale e fisico. Come più volte ribadito all'interno delle Carte Internazionali è importante definire i principi e gli obiettivi, nonché i metodi e gli strumenti mediante i quali si possa attuare la qualità della pianificazione territoriale favorendo sia l'armonia della vita individuale e sociale che la conservazione e valorizzazione dell'insieme di quei beni che costituiscono la memoria dell'umanità.

Nel presentare tre progetti per tre diverse città, l'architetto Manuel Salgado illustra le esperienze metodologiche e le strategie della propria pratica professionale legate a differenti contesti urbani: la periferia degradata di Sintra, la marginale area orientale di Porto ed il centro storico consolidato di Viseu. Coglie inoltre l'occasione per analizzare il valore della partecipazione/conoscenza e l'importanza del fattore tempo nei processi di pianificazione, per suggerire l'introduzione di meccanismi interattivi tra piano e progetto e per esprimere alcune valutazioni sui recenti programmi di riqualificazione urbana ed ambientale messi in atto in Portogallo. BASE ISOLATION AND STRUCTURAL CONFIGURATION
This paper illustrates the design criteria that guided the architectural and structural designs of the base isolated buildings of the new Emergency Management Centre of Foligno (Umbria).
A special attention was paid to the architectural shapes and structural configurations. They have been selected in order to maximize the effectiveness of the seismic protection that can
be achieved through the Base Isolation approach. The high potentiality of the Base Isolation option is also illustrated showing its capacity to solve the design problems that arose when,
at the end of a first structural design phase, the new Italian seismic code attributed Foligno to a higher level of seismic risk. The construction works of the buildings are now in progress.

Il Panoptico di Ibagué in Colombia.
A partire dal 1892, secondo le direttive di Jeremy Bentham e su disegno dell'architetto inglese William Blackburn ad Ibagué, nel centro della Colombia, inziavano i lavori per la costruzione di un grande carcere. A pianta cruciforme l'edificio originario rispettava perfettamente le caratteristiche di una struttura a ''Panoptico''. La prima sua occupazione viene fatta risalire al 1902. Dopo un secolo dalla sua istituzione il carcere è stato dismesso ed oggi sono in fase di conclusione i lavori di restauro finalizzati al riuso della struttura come museo della città. Il progetto è dell'architetto Luis Humberto Duque Gómez.

Ovvero sulla comprensione reciproca
Il breve dialogo immaginario che segue è un estratto di un testo più ampio di prossima pubblicazione. Un irreale incontro tra due ideali divinità, il genio del Luogo e il genio dell'Architettura, recuperando l'acute;antico strumento del dialogo, fondamentale per lo scambio delle idee e per la loro verifica. Tale forma di comunicazione, da sempre strumento di comprensione reciproca, ha antecedenti illustri, dallo stile socratico dei dialoghi platonici, a Heidegger, a Gadamer, fino alla prosa di Eupalinos di Paul Valery. Chiedo loro venia per essermene appropriata senza poter assurgere alla loro altezza, pensando però di averne condiviso lo stimolante piacere di questa forma di scrittura delle idee.

LA MURATURA ISOLATA ALLA BASE di Alberto Parducci
Grazie ai nuovi metodi di protezione sismica, la muratura è da considerare oggi come un normale sistema costruttivo capace di resistere ai terremoti senza particolari problemi. La muratura possiede un'ampia varietà di caratteristiche; alcune di esse non emergevano in una concezione convenzionale del problema sismico basata sulla sola ricerca di ''resistenza''. Altri aspetti la rendono invece adatta ad essere utilizzata utilmente se si applicano alcune tecniche innovative, come l'Isolamento alla Base (Base Isolation). L'abbinamento sfrutta bene la combinazione delle prestazioni dei due sistemi ed assicura livelli di sicurezza non inferiori a quelli degli altri materiali oggi più usati. E' perciò possibile, anche nelle zone a rischio sismico, costruire edifici sicuri senza rinunciare alle qualità estetiche, tecnologiche e di durabilità di questo antico sistema costruttivo.

NUOVI ORIZZONTI PER UN'ARCHITETTURA ANTISISMICA - Alberto Parducci
Si esaminano alcuni problemi riguardanti il coinvolgimento dell'Architettura per quanto riguarda il contributo compositivo nel progetto delle opere da realizzare nelle zone ad elevato rischio sismico. L'argomento è riferito alla capacità di risposta delle strutture nei confronti dei terremoti di grande violenza, quando l'intensità delle scosse raggiunge livelli tali da superare i normali limiti di resistenza dei materiali. In tal caso, la sola ricerca di un'adeguata ''resistenza'', intesa in senso tradizionale, non è più un obiettivo sufficiente. In aggiunta alle tecniche del Capacity Design [49,50] basate sul controllo dell'energia dissipata nei danneggiamenti, gli obiettivi diventano: individuare sistemi alternativi adeguati; ottimizzarne l'impiego per minimizzare i danni alle strutture ed alle parti non strutturali, ridurre, o possibilmente eliminare, le perdite dei valori contenuti; ridurre i costi per la riparazione delle costruzioni danneggiate.
